Dante's Set to be Student Offices
Date 5/14/1998 12:00 AM | Topic: NewsPlans are currently in progress to renovate the space previously occupied by Dante's to create new offices to be used by KWLC, Pioneer year book, Photo Bureau and CHIPS.
The decision to transform the area into office space came after the approval of the proposal submitted by the Dante's Task Force.
The members of the Task Force are Trish Neubauer, coordinator for student activities and Union, Jim Haemker, director of the Book Shop and Union Services, Jay Uthoff, manager of trade services, Dan Taylor ('00) and Fara Fernandes ('99).
According to Neubaeuer, the construction of offices in Union would greatly benefit the organizations by increasing their visibility on campus.
"It would help the different groups in terms of publicity and getting students involved," said Neubaeur.
There has also been concern some of the organizations like KWLC, located on North Street and the Photo Bureau located in the Larson basement, have been isolated from students.
Students have limited access to these organizations and their activities, said Ann Highum, dean for student life. By establishing base in Union, the purpose and existence of these groups will be open to more students.
"It would be great to have all the student media organizations in a central location close to the student population," said Highum.
Representatives from all the media organizations will have the opportunity to communicate with the builders and add their imput into the design of the specific offices, said Highum. This is to ensure that the specific needs of each organization are satisfied.
"The great part of this building process is that students will get the chance to talk with the designers and have the areas built to their needs," said Highum.
Concerns have been raised regarding whether there is enough space to accommodate all four organizations.
Jennifer Cantine, general manager of KWLC, expressed concern about the adequacy of the space allocated KWLC.
KWLC, which currently operates from Norby house, petitioned for relocation to Union. However, it would be unfortunate if they are allocated less than what is already occupied, said Cantine.
According to Highum, the offices should be ready for occupancy before the beginning of next semester.
" We hope to have the offices ready by the end of summer so students can move in when the semester starts," said Highum.
