Romance Of The Horseshoe Crab

Financial In Market A couple of weeks ago, just before the new moon, I checked the tides for Provincetown, Mass. Spring tide was at noon and again around midnight. Perfectly civilized times. We could relax at the White Horse, brunch at Little Fluke, dine at the Red Inn, and still catch most of the action. All along the East Coast, on the full and new moons of May and June, millions of horseshoe crabs head for the beach, rising from the sea like creatures from some Paleozoic dream.

Amendments include options to reduce horseshoe crab harvest, implement seasonal closures and revise biomedical and monitoring requirements. In New Jersey, changes include capping the state's annual harvest at 150, 000 crabs and prohibiting the harvest and landing of horseshoe crabs from May 1 to June 7. The state would also have the opportunity to allow crabs destined for the bait industry to be bled for biomedical purposes, thus helping reduce overall mortality associated with the process of bleeding.

Oriental Trading More trilobite than crustacean, these armored invertebrates were working the tides 100 million years before dinosaurs took over the world and they are still making the same yearly journeys to spawn.

This year, however, - - is asking the public to help them identify beaches and shoreline areas where horseshoe crabs are spawning. Male and female horseshoe crabs are coupled when mating, which make identification rather easy.

Financial Forex Forex Software Animal migrations are guideposts to the seasons and, for me, the late-spring rising of horseshoe crabs points directly to the shore. When my wife, Laura, and I arrived at First Encounter Beach, the beach pea was in bloom and the song sparrows were in full trill atop the salt-spray rose. As soon as we waded into Cape Cod Bay, a roving horseshoe crab scurried past us in the rising tide, then retreated below. A minute later, he was back, hovering over Laura's toes. (Yes, she squealed.)

Trading Despite their tough facade the helmeted shell, leather-black eyes, and stiff exclamation-point tail horseshoe crabs are relatively harmless. Unless, of course, you're a mollusk or worm, in which case you had best avoid the chewing mill at the heart of their 14 legs. But they don't ride the tides to feed, rather to avoid egg predators. In Delaware Bay, spawning congregations are so thick they are called "pavements." On Cape Cod, near the northern edge of their range, the crabs resemble stepping stones, scattered all over the shore.

Recently, the New Jersey Marine Fisheries Council voted in favor of a ban on harvesting female horseshoe crabs. crab harvesting is a more prudent and necessary measure, I applaud the council for recognizing the urgency of the situation and taking immediate action.

Trading Financial System In the 90's, I started following the rails, the tracks that horseshoe crabs leave in the sand, just off a flight path for John F. Kennedy International Airport on Jamaica Bay. Working with the New York City Audubon Society and City Corps volunteers, we removed hundreds of tires and mountains of trash from an otherwise perfectly good spawning beach in Far Rockaway, Queens. We watched as scores of horseshoe crabs crowded the shallow waters.

By banning the harvest of female horseshoe crabs, more female crabs will deposit eggs on bayshore beaches, more knots will make it to the Arctic to breed, and our state will enjoy more dollars from the soaring ecotourism industry, which is already estimated at $34 million annually.

Day Trading Once a female finds her place on the edge of the tide, she burrows into the sand as a tick would dig into smooth skin. One male clings to her abdomen and a half-dozen roving males may pile on, eager to fertilize any eggs missed by the first male. The biggest females, with shells the size of serving trays, seem to get all the guys; they have the most eggs. In a few weeks, the eggs hatch, and the sand-colored young move into the shallows. That is, unless the shorebirds the willets and plovers, turnstones and sanderlings get to them first. Or the humans, before the adults even get a chance to spawn. Though they are no longer ground up for fertilizer, horseshoe crabs are still in high demand. Each year about 250,000 are rounded up and returned to the sea alive after being drained of about a cup of their milky blue blood, which is used in Limulus amebocyte lysate tests, to check blood products and vaccines. Then there are the three or four million crabs collected for bait they are cut up and put in traps to attract conchs and eels.

Forex Financial Trading The At the Massachusetts Audubon Society's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary a few minutes from Provincetown, the crabs are protected, from people at least. One unfortunate suitor, overturned in his passion, flailed his legs as the tide drifted out from under him. Considering a rescue mission, we watched as he attempted to right himself with his tail. But we were separated by a deep tidal creek and by the time we got there, a gull had flown in, snapping the crab's scissory legs with its beak.

Fortune Make Option Trading That night, we stopped for Manhattans and lobster fondue at the Red Inn. The moon was new. A foghorn moaned across the water. And horseshoe crabs scuttled along the concrete seawall in search of a proper place to spawn.

Science Of Financial Market As we followed the shore after dinner, the spring mating calls of Fowler's toads bleated across the dunes where the lady-slipper orchids were in full-lipped bloom for another week or two.

Future Trading The sound of the toads gave way to pulsing techno when we joined the crowds on Commercial Street, Provincetown's main drag. There, as our innkeeper informed us, "it's always mating season for everyone."
