"Bouncer" Smith on his offer to take me tarpon fishing - which explains how I found myself in Dumfounding Bay one blustery evening, hanging onto the bow rail of Bouncer's 25-foot Dusky with one hand and a 100-pound-class tarpon with the other.

That combination favored 18-year-old Anthony Ferrier's capture of a 238-pound tarpon in Fort Lauderdale in early March 1991. At Miami, the attraction comes from deep water in conjunction with outlets to the sea that join to produce stable water temperatures and shrimp.

Future Trading "Miami is a natural winter habitat for tarpon," says Bouncer, because of the warm Gulf Stream water 2 miles offshore and the explosion of shrimp hatching out in Biscayne and Florida bays. "At both Haulover Inlet and Government Cut, we probably have the biggest concentration of tarpon you'll find anywhere during the winter."

On tidal shifts during the new and full moon, tarpon by the hundreds can be seen frothing the surface of Miami's main shipping channel, Government Cut, gulping at the skittering shrimp as they run the gauntlet between shrimp boats and dip nets.

Commodity Trading "I make it my business to be out fishing on the coldest nights," says Bouncer. "I tough it out, and so do my parties, dressed in two layers of clothing. But we stay because we know the shrimp are going to run and the tarpon will go crazy on the outgoing tide."

Financial Services Trading When it comes to targeting these fish, you can fish them on either tide, but Bouncer prefers the outgoing, especially when it's cold. "Tarpon will bite night or day on the outgoing tide," says Bouncer, "but you get more hits at night."

Sierra Trading Post Live baiting is the most productive technique for fishing the inlets. It's also the best way to catch tarpon during the fall and spring mullet run, which normally occurs September through November and again in April and May. So successful is the technique that live mullet is just about all Bouncer fishes during this time period.

Trading Financial Future Fishing mostly 5- to 7-inch baits, he varies the depth from rod to rod. Unlike many south Florida guides who fish live mullet with a cork so the bait stays near the surface, Bouncer sets up a spread of baits, working one off the port-side downrigger and the second from the starboard rod holder with a breakaway sinker. A third, held by the angler or by Bouncer, is fished at or near the surface.

Forex Trading Software "Tarpon usually feed in the bottom half of the water column, so you always want to have at least one and preferably two baits about a third to halfway down."

Trading Post Many challenges face fishermen in Government Cut. Boat traffic and wind direction are major concerns in this inlet compared to the compact confines of Haulover, which tends to offer better protection except on an east wind. No matter which inlet you fish, you need a good recorder and effective bait presentation.

Trading System When the tide and shrimp boil out of the inlet on new and full moons, your best bet is to stick with live shrimp baits. "The bigger the better during the daytime," says Bouncer. "At night, shrimp size doesn't seem to matter. The tarpon seem to go for eye-shine more than size."

Forex Trading System In quieter spots near Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades, guides such as Mark Krowka and John Glorieux often anchor and fish live mullet on the outgoing tide at dusk. All winter, tarpon from 25 pounds to 150 pounds can be found working from the jetties, through the inlet to the hot-water canal near Port Everglades. Even on the coldest day, the hot (actually tepid) water almost guarantees you'll jump anywhere from a half-dozen to 20 fish there.
