Financial Sales Services If you have done any boating on rivers, you know all about current and wind, which always seem to work at odds to make your life more difficult. And now, in salt water, meet the new influence: tides. These diurnal fluctuations add yet another dimension to potential danger. Where yesterday you flew around a point of marsh, today you might find yourself on a sand or mud bar (or worse, rocks). An hour can make a big difference. Here, again, charts are most useful - assuming they're current.

Commodity Trading Saltwater boaters tend to pay an unusual amount of attention to tide tables - especially in coastal rivers and bays, where the influence of tides can be pervasive. Take Chesapeake Bay, for example. As large a body of water as it is, tidal influence is present all the way up to the falls of the Potomac in Washington, D.C.

Financial Services Trading Where you are makes a big difference. In the Bahamas, the tides may run only a few feet; in Canada's Bay of Fundy, as much as 40 feet. The back side of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, has a much steeper tide gradient than the ocean side. Trading Card The Coast Guard does an excellent job of maintaining aids to navigation in all navigable bodies of water, including major freshwater rivers and all inshore saltwater areas. To the novice, there may be a confusing array of sizes, shapes and colors. They all make sense, ultimately, and should be memorized.

In Online Trading The most basic use of these aids is the old maxim regarding the red and green channel markers, which can be floating devices, with or without sound or lights, or mere signposts. "Red right returning" (RRR) is the saying. It means simply to keep the red markers to your right when coming from seaward.

Online Commodity Trading In general (there probably are local exceptions, but I can't think of any), the green daymarks are square; the red daymarks are triangular.

Line Trading There are other aids as well, including lighted, can and nun buoys. These are defined by shape and color. Lighted buoys may be of either color, but cans are black (keep them to your left when entering from seaward), and nuns are red. And, to confuse you further, there are other floating aids that simply demark the middle of the channel (white), signal a junction (red and black) or warn you of forbidden anchorages (yellow). Others warn of shoals, fish net areas, dredging and on and on. Some have lights, as noted. Others may have sound, horns or both.

Online Option Trading But how do you know when you're ascending and when you heading seaward - as in a particularly confusing area of the Intracoastal Waterway, for example? In principle, if you are entering from the north and east and proceeding to the south and west, RRR. Otherwise, keep green to right.

Day Trading Online The Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) is the principal artery of boat traffic in the East and along the Gulf Coast. Navigational aids used here are a little different, but RRR when ascending still holds. In addition to daymarks and lighted buoys, you may find mile boards. Each daymark on the ICW is numbered or lettered. This is a big help in determining exactly where you are. The numbers get higher the farther up you go.

Forex Currency Trading System In general, traffic on the ICW, and elsewhere, goes along with one of our basic social tenets: Steer to the right (pass portside to portside). This doesn't always hold true, however. It is perfectly permissible to pass starboard to starboard under circumstances where passing port to port would be dangerous or require inordinately major changes of course. This requires more than a modicum of common sense - and the use of your horn (two blasts to signal your intention; the other skipper should acknowledge).

Trading Account Overtaking is another matter. You may legally pass on either side, but you should signal your intentions with your horn: one toot if passing on the left (port); two if passing on the right. Again, the skipper of the other boat should answer with the same number of toots. If he or she doesn't, slow down and assess the situation.

Foreign Currency Trading However, if a large vessel, such as a big tow, is coming at you in constricted waters, just stay out of its way, even if it means running in the opposite direction for a while. Barges, in particular, make wide turns and take a long time to slow down, much less stop.

No such rule exists in the salt, but - as with driving on the highway - your best defense when meeting another vessel (especially approaching a bend in a river or bay) is to assume that the oncoming vessel will do something stupid.

Online Stock Market Trading The whole question of right-of-way is complicated and deserves study, advice and thought. One quick example is dealing with fishing/shrimping/crabbing/whatever boats. In essence, a commercial vessel engaged in its trade, dragging a trawl or other nets or fishing lines has some right-of-way status - although it is not allowed to block the waterway. This is the law, but there always is some skipper who thinks the laws apply only to other people. Just steer clear.

Currency Forex Online Trading One other tip: When overtaking any vessel that's creating a large, deep wake, use extreme caution. If you attempt to cross it too closely, you could find yourself slipping dangerously into the trough.
