PMC-Sierra Successfully Demonstrates System Level Interoperability at Serial Attached SCSI (SAS Plugfest 2004)

PMC-Sierra's SXP 12x3G Achieves Interoperability with Multi-vendor SAS Controllers and SAS and SATA Disk Drives, Accelerating the Adoption of SAS into Enterprise Storage Systems

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 8, 2004-- At the SAS Plugfest, PMC-Sierra, Inc. (Nasdaq:PMCS) demonstrated system interoperability with multiple SAS controller vendors and SAS and SATA Hard Disk Drive (HDD) vendors including Fujitsu, Hitachi, Maxtor and Seagate. This milestone assures OEMs of an interoperable solution for next-generation SAS servers and server attached storage systems.
At the SAS Plugfest, held from June 21 to 25, 2004, at the University of New Hampshire, PMC-Sierra's PM8383 SXP 12x3G 12-port SAS expander device operated successfully in several system configurations including multiple HBAs, multiple expanders and 30-plus HDDs. During the interoperability testing, PMC-Sierra was successful in verifying the following functionality of its SXP 12x3G device:

-- Direct and subtractive routing

-- Table routing

-- SAS wide ports

-- Multiple expander cascading and tree topologies

-- All SMP functions including SATA port selector operation

-- Interoperation with SATA HDDs

"PMC-Sierra is working closely with the industry leaders to develop SAS expanders and ensure the success of SAS in the enterprise storage market," said Mark Stibitz, vice president and general manager of PMC-Sierra's Enterprise Storage Division. "The SXP 12x3G device is part of our growing family of industry-proven standard products that provide low-cost, high-performance solutions to storage OEMs."

"Maxtor supports interoperability testing to accelerate the deployment of SAS and SATA into a variety of applications," said Kevin Wittmer, director of technical marketing at Maxtor. "Demonstrating the interoperability of our Serial Attached SCSI and native Serial ATA hard drives with PMC-Sierra's SXP 12x3G will encourage OEMs to bring products to market quickly."

"Interoperability is vital to driving the widespread deployment of new technologies," said Paul Griffith, manager of strategic marketing at Adaptec. "Adaptec has successfully demonstrated the interoperability of our Serial Attached SCSI controllers with PMC-Sierra's SAS expander products."

About SAS Plugfest

The second SAS Plugfest was held at the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory in Durham, New Hampshire, from June 21 to 25, 2004. More than a dozen companies participated, including the industries' leading disk drive, semiconductor suppliers, test equipment, cable, connector and system suppliers. The event was used as a forum to build confidence in SAS designs by ensuring multi-vendor interoperability, SCSI backward compatibility and other related technology issues. About Serial Attached SCSI (SAS)

Serial Attached SCSI is the logical evolution of SCSI, including its long-established software advantage and the Serial ATA electrical and physical connection interface. With enterprise storage requirements escalating and becoming more complex, factors such as larger capacity, greater density, security, scalability and accessibility are more critical than ever. Enterprise data centers must be online all the time, fulfill requests from numerous users simultaneously, allow for constant growth and expansion and be maintained while in operation. Serial Attached SCSI meets all these demands while providing the highest performance. For more information, visit www.scita.org.
