In late January the chemical manufacturer had reported a sharply higher profitof $141 million compared with $16 million a year ago. Analysts are still expecting Lyondell to show stronger results, ignoring the rise in petrochemical costs. Lyondell, like Dow, manufactures petrochemicals used in the fertilizer manufacturing business.

The Reno-based manufacturer of environmental agricultural specialty liquid chemical fertilizers made from recycled photochemicals announced a 45% increase in sales in the fourth-quarter for its GOLD N'GRO liquid fertilizer in late January, but Friday, Knight Ridder's (NYSE: KRI) Reno Gazette-Journal misquoted figures on the company's results in a story on its results which affected Monday's trading. The newspaper has since posted a correction.

While commodity surpluses of crops exist, prices are expected to remain level this year, though margins are narrowing for crop producers thanks to higher energy costs overall. Crop experts are beginning to grow concerned with many distributors seeing new demand for alternative fertilizers such as that manufactured by Reno-based Itronics which is seeing more interest in specialty crops and cotton in California. The company recently announced that it doubled the capacity of its Reno fertilizer manufacturing plant, though no forecasts have been released.
